1848 Ltd (formely South West Mental Health Ltd.) is a residential care provider for looked after children in Somerset, England.
The Company was created by Vicky Hayward a mental health nurse with over 25 years experience. In this role, Vicky had witnessed first hand a care system that was struggling to help young people with complex mental health issues... who were in crisis through no fault of their own.
Vicky wanted to do something about this, she wanted to create something different. A key strategy was to create an in-house Wellbeing department to work alongside the residential homes.
In addition to traditional therapies the Wellbeing team wanted to create a BIG project that would capture the imagination of our young people and provide them with positive life experiences.
Lets Buy The Rainforest has been developed in-house by the 1848 Wellbeing team and is our big project.
Our mission is to turn our ideas into acres of rainforest protected and 'Kiss a Frog for the Rainforest' is our first BIG idea.
Let's Buy The Rainforest is a conservation and wellbeing project.
The conservation part is clear and all the monies our campaigns raise will go to the World Land Trust and their global conservation programme. Every £1 we raise = 435 sq ft of rainforest protected (based on an average land price of £100 per acre).
From a wellbeing perspective, coming up with ideas to save the rainforest, contacting famous people, raising funds on Just Giving, writing news blogs and seeing their efforts help to protect millions of sq ft of rainforest, will, we hope, provide many positive life experiences for our young people and be a bit life changing.
